The Drill Instructor
By Dominic Esposito
Safety-Play Shots You Never Think Of During The Game
Safety-Play Drill No. 1
Scenario: 1. The game is 8-Ball.
2. The 8 ball is blocking the 6 ball into the corner pocket.
3. You cannot see the 7 ball to make it.
Strategy: A. Set up opponent to foul, forcing ball-in-hand for better run out potential.
B. Nip the 6 ball, causing it to soft roll and push out 7 ball.
C. Let the cue ball bank into the bottom rail with enough speed to roll up
tight behind the 8 ball.
Comments: Let the 7 ball will stop the 6 ball. Your main concern is the cue ball speed needed to get in tight behind the 8 ball. The thinner you nip the 6 ball, the less Inside English you’ll need to turn the cue ball up toward the 8 ball.

Safety-Play Drill No. 2
Scenario: 1. Again, the game is 8-Ball.
2. The angle to shoot the 6 ball into the side pocket is blocked by the 7 ball and cutting the 6 ball into the corner is no good. The striped ball is in your way.
Strategy: A. You want your opponent up to foul, giving you ball-in-hand and to run out.
B. Nip the 6 ball causing it to roll softly into the 7 ball.
C. The 7 ball will bounce inches in and out of the side rail.
D. Cause the cue ball to roll up tight behind the 7 ball.
Comments:
The 7 ball has to deflect the 6 ball. Again, the main issue is the cue ball speed needed to get in tight behind the 7 ball. Be sure to hit the 7 ball with enough force to be sure it comes about one ball out from the rail.
